Botox and Xeomin Treatments

Our office is now offering both Botox and Xeomin for facial injection. These are two brand names of the same type of injectable drug and can both be used therapeutically and aesthetically. The two drugs work in the same manner, but Xeomin is a slightly lower cost option. For simplicity, we’ll refer to both brands here as “Botox.”

Botox treatment is a great option for people who experience regular headaches or jaw pain. When the muscles in our face work overtime, often from stress or clenching and grinding, they can cause us to feel what most people would describe as “TMJ,” jaw pain, or headaches. Botox can be injected into these muscles to lower their activity level and, in turn, reduce the amount of discomfort we feel. Botox is an effective treatment for these types of pain. Like many medications, the body will eventually break it down, so it is recommended that injections are repeated every 3-4 months to keep your muscles feeling happy!

Many of these same facial muscles also cause the wrinkles that we see on our forehead and around our eyes and mouth. Decreasing the activity of the muscles with Botox can smooth out the wrinkles we see. Some common areas that can be treated are the forehead, the glabellar lines (commonly called the “elevens”) between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and wrinkles around the mouth/lips. Everyone responds differently to Botox injections, so we start with the lowest recommended dose in most cases. After 14 days, if the results are not robust enough, an enhancement treatment may be appropriate. This is done 2-3 weeks later and additional units of are injected into the muscles that need it.
